Who needs a visa for Turkey?

Are you going on a holiday or business trip to Turkey in 2021 or 2022? British and Irish citizens, and any other nationalities that are not part of the visa-exempt countries for Turkey, will need to apply for a visa. Even underage children are only allowed in if they possess their own Turkey visa. Are you not in possession of a valid visa? Then the Turkish immigration service will stop you at the passport check after your arrival in Turkey.

What is an e-visa Turkey?

This is an official travel authorisation from the Turkish government to enter the country through land, sea or air. When this website mentions the visa for Turkey, it always refers to the electronic variant known as the “e-visa Turkey”. You can apply for this travel permit entirely online, and after it has been granted it will be sent to you by e-mail (example e-visa). You can submit an application for yourself, for somebody else or for an entire travel party at once.

Turkey Visa Requirements

To make use of the e-visa Turkey you have to meet a number of requirements. Below, the most important requirements are summed up; more information can be found on the page concerning the requirements for the Turkey visa.

  • Your trip has a tourist or business-related purpose.
  • You are travelling with a valid passport. British and Irish citizens, and British Nationals (Overseas) qualify for this visa. Travellers from certain countries can also travel with their identity card (ID card).
  • Travelling with a passport? Then it has to be valid for at least six more months after your arrival in Turkey.
  • You cannot enter into employment with a Turkish company during your stay.
  • You cannot study at a Turkish educational institution during your stay.

Validity period and maximum length of stay

Follow the rules and avoid fines, deportation or a ban. The Turkey visa is valid for 180 days. This validity period starts on the date of arrival, as indicated in the online application form. During these 180 days, you are allowed to stay in Turkey for a maximum of 90 days.

From 2 March 2020, British nationals travelling for tourism or business purposes will no longer need a visa to enter Turkey for visits of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. For those that require a visa it is recommended that you get an e-Visa online through the official Republic of Turkey e-Visa website.

Currently, the nationals of 78 countries and territories do not need to get a visa before traveling to Turkey for tourism or commercial purposes. The length of stay provided by visa or visa exemption cannot exceed 90 days within each 180 days. The regulation of 90 days of stay within the last 180 days is binding for all foreigners that will travel to Turkey.
